W Hotel
Dubai, UAE
W Hotel The Palm is one of the luxury hotels located on the famous artificial offshore island in Dubai, Palm Jumeirah. planBstudio designed a custom sofa made of 285 pixels for the resort’s lounge area.
The idea of using pixels, inspired by Ron Arad’s project Do-Lo-Rez (2008) for company Moroso, is the key to understanding the image that appears by joining the single units. The very nature of the work provides complete freedom in how the modules are put together: soft square-based parallelepipeds that vary in height and color. The project focuses on creating a three-dimensional system by combining the shape’s creative aspect with the environment’s spatial and functional aspects.
Similar to an installation, the sofa plays with the hotel’s area dedicated to meetings and relaxation. The elements are presented in eighteen different heights and nine different colors, both cold and warm, customized for the client. The individual pixels that make up the sofa’s apparently casual “image” emerge from a two-dimensional grid that resembles the modules’ particular composition. What we get is a reflection of colors and shapes that remind two distinctive aspects of the area: the dunes and the ocean’s water.
